Arsenal bounce back from West Ham loss, Edge out Crystal Palace. Get their first points of the Season
Arsenal Outlasted a gritty Crystal Palace side to get their season back on track, eking out a 2-1 win thanks to an own goal from Damien Delaney. The Gunners, who had been stunned last weekend in their home opener by another London side, West Ham, looked far slicker and more assured at Selhurst Park this afternoon, but also showed a disturbing tendency to be opened up at the back by a Palace side that has genuine top-ten ambitions.
With Arsenal’s first three points of the new season in the bag, manager Arsene Wenger will not be too concerned about finding answers to both questions, but Palace will certainly dwell on the fact the visitors finished the game with 11 men.
It wasn’t the prettiest Arsenal victory, but Wenger will be particularly pleased at the fight his team showed at a bouncing Selhurst Park. Mesut Ozil and Cazorla were probably the Gunners’ best players, although special mention should go to Mertesacker at the back (for winning the aerial battle with Wickham) and for Giroud, for his quite brilliant opening goal.
That’s it – Arsenal get their first points of the season!
