President Muhammadu Buhari has come up with the first crucial appointment in his cabinet.
Buhari yesterday unveiled the new appointee for the position, and that is himself.
He also disclosed that he will appoint a minister of State for Petroleum.
He said this while addressing reporters in New York on Tuesday, after addressing a Global Leaders’ Summit on Countering ISIL and Violent Extremism.
Buhari explained that he made the decision as part of efforts to sanitise Nigeria’s oil industry which is said to be plagued by corruption, massive fraud, and crude oil theft.
Buhari restated his determination to sanitise Nigeria’s oil industry and free it from corruption and shady deals.
He said that the first step in that direction had already been taken with the appointment of a new management for the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and its subsequent re-organisation.
It should be recalled that shortly after the May 29 inauguration indications emerged that Buhari was set to appoint himself at the petroleum minister as “nobody’s hands are clean enough to do the surgical changes needed”, which was said by one of the president’s associates.
